Standards of Learning (SOLs) for Computer Science & Digital Learning Integration

The Virginia Department of Education identifies skills necessary for students to become technologically proficient. These standards should be addressed within the curriculum at each grade level. According to the VDOE, "These skills should be introduced and refined collaboratively by all K-12 teachers as an integral part of the learning process. Teachers can use these standards as guidelines for planning technology-based activities in which students achieve success in learning, communication, and prepare them to meet the challenges of today’s technology-rich world of work." The VDOE has created two different Standards of Learning (SOLs) for the development of technology skills: Computer Science (adopted 2017) and Digital Learning Integration (adopted 2020).

One of the goals of the Enhancing Education Through Technology program of the No Child Left Behind Act is that all students are technologically literate by the time they reach 8th grade. The 5th grade technology class at the middle schools will ensure that all students have a foundation level of technology skills. Students in the middle school will document their mastery of the computer technology SOL through identified projects at each grade level.
