Dual Language in Harrisonburg City Public Schools
Dual Language is a program where students learn for part of the time in English and part of the time in Spanish. They learn the same math, science, and social studies as other students at their grade level, but they learn some of it in English and some in Spanish. They take the same required state tests as all other students.
El programa bilingüe es una estrategia de enseñanza en la cual los estudiantes aprenden parte del tiempo en inglés y parte del tiempo en español. Tienen las mismas materias – matemáticas, ciencias y estudios sociales- y aprenden lo mismo que los otros estudiantes que están en el mismo grado del programa de estudio regular, solamente que estudian algunos temas en inglés y otros en español. También toman los mismos exámenes estatales que los demás estudiantes.
Dual Language programs are effective at helping English Language Learners be successful in school, including learning English. They also give opportunities for English speakers to become bilingual and biliterate. Our program is English/Spanish because the majority of our English Language Learners speak Spanish at home.
Los programas bilingües ayudan a los estudiantes que están aprendiendo inglés como segundo idioma a avanzar académicamente tanto como a aprender inglés. También les brindan la oportunidad, a quienes hablan solamente inglés, de poder hablar, leer y escribir en dos idiomas. En Harrisonburg nuestro programa bilingüe es en inglés y español porque la mayoría de los estudiantes que aprenden inglés como segunda lengua hablan español en sus hogares.

All current HCPS Pre-K students and those who register for kindergarten at the Welcome Center before August will be entered into the dual language lottery.
Rising kindergarteners with an older sibling already in the program will be automatically placed in a dual classroom and will not participate in the lottery. The lottery will be held the first week of August, and families will be notified of the results shortly after. Each school will host an informational meeting in the spring.
Todos los estudiantes actuales de preescolar de HCPS y aquellos que se inscriban para kínder en el Centro de bienvenida antes de agosto participarán en la lotería del programa dual. Los estudiantes que ingresen a kínder y tengan un hermano mayor que ya esté en el programa de lenguaje dual serán ubicados automáticamente en un aula dual y no participarán en la lotería. La lotería se llevará a cabo la primera semana de agosto y las familias serán notificadas de los resultados poco después. Cada escuela organizará una reunión informativa para las familias en primavera.
