At SES we believe in fostering an environment in which students, staff, and families are:

Nurtured in a safe, positive, and caring learning community where a focus is placed on the whole person as we celebrate individual differences, gifts, and talents.  We collaborate with community resources to meet basic needs and encourage the social, emotional, and physical development of each individual.

Educated to problem-solve, question, and think critically in an environment where intrinsic motivation is the catalyst for integrated, relevant, and meaningful learning. We work to meet learners where they are while maintaining developmentally-appropriate high expectations for behavior, attitude, and academics to ensure that everyone will learn.

Inspired to utilize the skills developed through an environment focused on nurturing and educating one another to embrace new, different, and creative experiences.  We empower each individual to reach his/her personal best in order to make positive choices and become lifelong learners who actively contribute to their community.

How Spotswood Got Its Name

Founded in 1960,  Spotswood Elementary was named after Governor Alexander Spotswood who was a past governor of Virginia.  In 1716, Alexander Spotswood led a group of men across the Blue Ridge Mountains and discovered the Shenandoah Valley.  The group of men he took with him was thereafter nicknamed "The Knights of the Golden Horseshoe" (which is our school mascot.)

Our School

Spotswood Elementary School, a one-story building, is located in southeast Harrisonburg on 16 acres of land at the corner of Mountain View Drive and Carlton Avenue. Kiwanis Recreation Park adjoins the school property. Spotswood Elementary School celebrated its 50th year in 2010.

Spotswood Elementary has about 415 students. We have 24 regular classroom teachers serving Kindergarten through Grade 5 with additional resource personnel and staff.  Our school colors are purple and gold.
