About Dr. Scott Kizner, Superintendent

I have more than 19 years of experience as a school superintendent. Prior to coming to Harrisonburg, I served six years as the Superintendent of the Martinsville City Public Schools following a five-year term as Superintendent of the Westerly, Rhode Island Public Schools. I hold a Bachelor of Arts degree from Baruch College, a Master of Arts degree from James Madison University, an Education Specialist degree from James Madison University, and a Doctor of Philosophy degree from Virginia Tech. I have also completed post-doctoral requirements in educational leadership at the University of Virginia.

Prior to becoming a superintendent, my educational experiences included teaching children with disabilities, being a school psychologist, directing special education programs, and serving as assistant superintendent of instruction in the Northern Shenandoah region of Virginia. I have served on many state and national boards including the Governor’s School Readiness Task Force and the Virginia Early Childhood Advisory Council.  I serve on the Governing Board of the American Association of School Adminstrators (AASA), Virginia Association of School Superintendents (VASS), and the Minority Student Achievement Network (MSAN). I also serve on Virginia's Board of Juvenile Justice and the Superintendent Leadership Council.  I recently served on the State Special Education Advisory Committee, along with serving in leadership roles on state and national school administration organizations.

My wife, Lori, is Executive Director for the Boys & Girls Club.  We have a 32-year-old daughter who is a lawyer in Richmond, a 28-year-old daughter who teaches special education, and a 24-year-old daughter who is an elementary school teacher.
