Parents wishing to enroll their children in Harrisonburg City Public Schools should refer to the table below to see if you enroll your child at the school or the Welcome Center.  The Welcome Center is a service of Harrisonburg City Public Schools.  The Welcome Center facilitates entry into Harrisonburg city schools for our youngest students; our Preschoolers and our rising Kindergartners and for our students who have a language other than English.

You can register your child directly at your neighborhood school if…

You are invited to register your child at the Welcome Center if you answer yes to ANY of the following questions…

The child speaks only English. The child speaks a language other than English
English is the only language spoken in the home. The family speaks languages other than English at home.
The child has attended school only in the U.S. The child has attended school outside of the U.S.


Note: Upcoming Kindergarten students who did not attend preschool in HCPS register at the Welcome Center during the summer.

If you believe your child needs to register at the Welcome Center, or if you’ve answered “Yes” to at least one item in the second column above, call 540-433-3644 to make an appointment. Our office is open all year, January through December, Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  The Welcome Center is located in the HCPS Family Resource Center at 640 South Main Street Harrisonburg, VA 22801. Limited parking is available on the side of the building for compact cars, these parking places can be reached from the front of the building on South Main Street.  A large parking lot is available at the back of the building and is accessible from Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. Please come to the front entrance when you arrive.


The following documents/information will be asked for at your appointment:

  • Birth Certificate
  • Legal Guardianship
  •     Proof of residency in Harrisonburg City - Acceptable recent (within the last 60 days) documents include:
            - utility bill (water, electric, gas, cable, phone)
            - rental/lease agreement, deed or mortgage statement.
            - paystub or letter from employer on company letterhead confirming address
            - mailed letter from a government agency (TANIF, SSA, IRS, DSS, HUD, etc.) to parent/guardian address
  • Immunization Records/*Physical
  • Previous School's Name and Phone number
  • Health Insurance Card

* All new students PreK-5 entering the Harrisonburg City Schools for the first time must show proof of having received a physical examination by a doctor, including required immunizations. 

Children that turn five years of age on or prior to September 30th of the current year are eligible to enroll for kindergarten in Harrisonburg City Public Schools. Children who turn 4 years of age on or prior to September 30th are encouraged to apply for early childhood education services. The Welcome Center's phone number is 540.433.3644

 

Applying for Preschool Services

Harrisonburg City Public Schools provides early childhood education to preschool children that qualify for those services. An appointment must be made with the Welcome Center to apply for services for four year olds. To apply to Head Start preschool (3 year olds only), complete this online application.
